How to Use a Smoker Box for Grilling

A smoker box can be used when you want to add wood flavor smoke to your food. Grilling or smoking wood chips are used in the Smoker Box. Note- there is no difference between grilling and smoking wood chips – just two names for the same thing.

It is also important to remember that all grilling wood chips are not the same. Look for organic wood chips that are about  one inch long. Smaller chips burn up fast  and are typically used in commercial smoking with an auto-feeder. Organic grilling wood chips are not process using chainsaw oil and chipper grease. – yucky

How to Use a Smoker Box for Grilling Wood Chip using Charcoal Grill

1.Place a handful of grilling woods  chips in water, wine, beer or liquor and allow the chips to soak for at least a 1/2 hour prior to cooking.

Hint – As part of the How to Use Smoker Box for Grilling -We place our wood chips into a small freezer bag, add water and put them in the freezer. When ready to grill, simply pull them out of the freezer and use. No need to thaw.

2.Arrange your briquettes into a pyramid and ignite. After the flame has died down re-arrange briquettes to one side of the grill. Wait about 20 minutes until the coals are covered with a white ash.

3.Place a steam pan (metal bowl of water) on the opposite side of the coals and fill with water. This will keep your food from dehydrating.

4.Place a handful of saturated wood chips in smoker box and place smoker box directly on the charcoal.

5.Keep the top vent open or you risk making the food bitter by over-smoking it. Adjust the bottom vent to keep the grill temperature between 225 and 300 degrees F.

How to Use a Smoker Box for Grilling using Gas Grill

1.Place a handful of grilling wood chips in water, wine, beer or favorite liquor and then allow the chips to soak for at least 1/2 hour prior to cooking.

Hint - As part of the How to Use a Smoker Box for Grilling - We place our wood chips into a small freezer bag, add water and put them in the freezer. When ready to grill, simply pull them out of the freezer and use. No need to thaw.

2.Ignite the gas burner on one side of the grill, leaving all other burners off. Preheat to 450 degrees F.

3.Place a handful of saturated wood chips into a smoker box.

4.Place the smoker box on the lit burner underneath the cooking grate, close the grill lid and allow the box to heat until the chips start to smoke.

5.Adjust the cook burners to maintain a grill temperature between 225 and 300 degrees F.

How to Use a Smoker Box for Grilling using Electric Grill.

1. Use the same process as with gas except the Smoker box will be on the cooking grate.
